Elmquist Jewelers Through the Years
In November 1869, brothers, Peter Johan and David Elmquist emigrated to the United States from Kronoberg County, Småland in Sweden, according to family genealogy records.
The original United States citizenship papers for the eldest, Peter, reveal that they arrived in Quebec, Canada around May 1869.
In 1870, their United States citizenship papers were officially signed in Dunn County, WI, an event that marked the beginning of a new enterprise in a new country that has survived for over a century.
Oscar Elmquist would walk to his jewelry store in the early morning hours. He would work all day, go home for supper, and come back to work again to clean up all the odds and ends. This hard work is what got everything really rolling!
David Elmquist started Elmquist Jewelers on Benson Ave. in Willmar, then moved one block over to Litchfield Avenue. When Oscar took over, he moved it to what was then the Lakeland Hotel. It stayed there for 37 years.
Don Elmquist then moved the store right next door.
Cy Giere and Mike Noonan take ownership of Elmquist Jewelers, still in their downtown Willmar location. Elmquist stayed in downtown Willmar for over 100 years!
Officially running business from their current location near Home Depot, Jill Hanson and Chrissy Forsell join Mike Noonan in ownership of Elmquist Jewelers.
